TORONTO (Feb 8, 2010) No scorers? No problem.
The Hamilton Bulldogs were missing four of their top six scorers on the weekend but didn't miss a beat.
With Brock Trotter, David Desharnais, Ben Maxwell and Mathieu Darche -- their first, second, fourth and sixth ranked scorers all up with the Montreal Canadiens, the Bulldogs went into Rochester and beat the Amerks 5-2 Friday night and then followed that up with a 2-1 victory over the Toronto Marlies Saturday at the Ricoh Coliseum in Hogtown.
"Everyone knows what kind of people we lost, really good players and everyone knew that we had to step up," said Mike Glumac who scored both goals against the Marlies.
"Even though our top scorers were missing, one good thing that we did, was play really good defensively, holding them to just 12 shots. When you have a lot of firepower out if you can hold a team to that many shots they're not going to get that many good opportunities."
The 12 Marlies shots is a franchise record for the Bulldogs for the fewest shots against in a game. The previous record of 13 was set eight years ago against Hershey.
The Bulldogs spotted the Marlies the first goal of the game. Andre Deveaux scored it on a perfect deflection, on a power play just 1:45 into the game.
The Dogs won it on a pair of goals by Glumac in the second, his 12th and 13th of the year. He tied it on a power play at 2:16 banging one in from the back door.
Glumac also scored the game winner at 4:31 on a breakaway. He had missed on a breakaway earlier, firing high and wide on Joey MacDonald's glove side. The win was the Bulldogs seventh in a row and their sixth straight on the road.
The Dogs are back in action on Friday when they go to Cleveland to face Lake Erie.
On Saturday night they host Abbotsford.
Saturday night's game was the last for defenceman Yannick Weber for a while.
He left yesterday to join the Swiss national team in their preparations for the Vancouver Olympics later this month.
